FOLAMET

Description
Food for special medical purposes (AFMS) and is indicated for the dietary management of hyeromocysteinemia resulting from a genetic deficiency of the metilen-tetrahydrophosatereductase enzyme (MTHFR), also known as folic acid genetic polymorphism. The L-5-methylfolate is the metabolically active form of folic acid and is able, through the transfer of a methyl group, to revert homocysteine in methionine even in the presence of the genetic deficit. B2, B6, B12 and zinc are enzyme cofactors that enhance the activity of L-5-methylfolate in controlling Hyperomocysteinemia.
The levo-5-methylfolate or methylfolate (6S-5-Metil-THF or MTHF) is the biologically active form of folate, is naturally present in our organism and represents 98% of plasma folate. Bioavailability studies have shown that methylfolate supplementation is effective in improving folate levels both at plasma and erythrocyte level. Methylfolate does not need to be biotransformed neither by the dihydrofolatoreductase enzyme (DHFR), nor by the metilen-tetrahydrofolatoreduttasi enzyme (MTHFR). Therefore, the bioavailability of Metilfolato is not limited by the saturation of such enzymes and its intake does not involve the presence of non metabolized forms of folate in the blood. Methylfolate therefore does not suffer from functional polymorphisms of MTHFR and DHFT genes. Methylfolate has a lower risk of interaction with DHFR inhibitory drugs (e.g. metotrexate), and has less chance of masking hematologic symptoms resulting in vitamin B12 deficiency in patients with pernicious anemia. Moreover, methylfolate is stable at exposure to visible light and UV radiation. Therefore, in conditions of exposure to sunlight, methylfolate supplementation ensures stability of levels of blood folate that cannot be guaranteed by folates of other nature. In conclusion, methylfolate is able to correct Hyperomocysteinemia even in the presence of genetic mutations and enzyme polymorphisms related to the metabolism of folates.
