MTHFR Prevent Plus
Description
Food for special medical purposes with 2 mg of L-5-methylfolate (or L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate) of calcium, vitamins of group B and zinc. MTHFR Prevent Plus is indicated for the dietary management of hypermocysteinemia resulting in a proven genetic defect of reductase methyl-tetrahydrofolate (MTHFR). L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate in the presence of specific coenzymes, vitamin B12, B6, B2 and zinc, is able to provide the methyl group necessary for the conversion of homocysteine in methionine even in the presence of the genetic defect. The particular association of components arises from the need to restore the physiological mechanism of the metabolic defect resulting from the familiarity for genetic borrowings or polymorphisms of the reductase methyl-tetrahydrofolate gene (MTHFR).
L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate calcium: it is a synthetic derivative of the natural L-5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid that contains a reduced and methylated pteridinic ring system. L-5-MTHF is the biologically active form and is used by the body as such without undergoing further processes of biotransformation.
The use of L-5-MTHF seems more suitable than folic acid because:
- in cases of MTHFR polymorphism folic acid cannot be involved in L-5-MTHF;
- folic acid and L-5-MTHF have comparable physiological activity, bioavailability and absorption;
- contrary to folic acid that needs to be reduced in two steps, L-5-MTHF can be used directly in methylation reactions;
- folic acid at high dosages can mask a megaloblastic anemia.
MTHFR and hyperosmocysteine: MTHFR is an enzyme that converts folates (vitamin B9) from food in the active form and usable from the body, called 5-MTHF (methylfolate) a molecule that allows the repetition of homocysteine in methionine through the intervention of vitamin B12 as a cofactor. Homocysteine is an amino acid that can cause inflammation and hardening of the arteries. It forms naturally in the body. When methylation occurs, it becomes an essential amino acid beneficial, called methionine. High levels of this amino acid negatively affect the functions of the nervous system, cardiovascular and bone, especially through an increase in the production of free radicals and the oxidative stress that follows.
High levels of homocysteine can be caused by different causes and predisposable factors grouped into 3 groups:
- genetic factors;
- physiological factors;
- acquired factors of nature.
