Therapeutic indications

Decongestant of the nasal mucosa, especially in case of cold.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity known to the product, prostate hypertrophy, heart disease and severe arterial hypertension. Glaucoma, hyperthyroidism. The drug is contraindicated in children under the age of 12. Do not administer during and in the two weeks following antidepressant medication therapy.

Population

After blowing your nose, nebulize 1 – 2 times per nostril every 6 – 8 hours, unless otherwise indicated by your doctor; after nebulization, inhale deeply keeping your mouth shut. To nebulize the preparation: 1. If the bottle is new, press 2–3 times the dispenser, without introducing into the nostrils, in order to fill the pump. 2. Keep the bottle in vertical position; to put into the nostril its end and press with rapid and decisive motion during an intake after blowing the nose. For later applications, follow the instructions to point 2. Treatment should not be protracted over 4 days.

Warnings

In patients with cardiovascular diseases, especially in hypertensives, the use of nasal decongestionants must be subjected from time to time to judgement of the doctor. Benzalconio chloride (BAC) contained as a preservative in Rino Calyptol, especially when used for long periods, can cause a swelling of the nasal mucosa. If this reaction is suspected (persistent nasal congestion), it should be used, if possible, a nasal medication without BAC. If such nasal medications without BAC were not available, it should be considered another pharmaceutical form. It can cause bronchospasm. Protracted use of vasoconstrictors can alter the normal function of the mucosa of the nose and of the paranasal breasts, also inducing addiction to the drug. Repeating applications for long periods may be harmful. During the first months of pregnancy and for danger of urinary retention in the elderly, the product can be used only after consulting the doctor. The use, especially if prolonged, of topical products can give rise to awareness-raising phenomena; in such case it is necessary to stop the treatment and establish an adequate therapy. However, in the absence of complete therapeutic response within a few days, consult your doctor; in any case the treatment should not be protracted for over 4 days. Strictly adhere to the recommended doses. The product, if accidentally ingested or used for a long time in excessive doses, may cause toxic phenomena. It must be kept away from the reach of children, since accidental ingestion can cause marked sedation. It should not be used by mouth. Avoid contact with eyes.

Interactions

Do not associate with antidepressant drugs.

Effects

The product can determine phenomena of local sensitization and congestion of mucosa due to rebound. For rapid absorption of oxytazoline through inflamed mucosa, systemic effects can occur, consisting of arterial hypertension, reflex bradycardia, headache, urination disorders.

Overdosing

In case of overdose, arterial hypertension, tachycardia, photophobia, intense headache, thoracic oppression and, in children, hypothermia and severe depression of the central nervous system with marked sedation, requiring the adoption of adequate emergency measures.

The product can be used, during the first months of pregnancy, only after consulting the doctor.
